I am a Spartan!

As you already know, inov-8 has recently signed on as the official footwear of the Spartan Race.

Along with being excited to work with Spartan, we are also terrified...

On August 11, a few of us here at inov-8 will be lacing up our X-Talons, Trailrocs, Roclites, etc. and hitting the Amesbury, MA course. Having never done an adventure/mud race of any kind myself, I have a sneaking suspicion I may be in over my head.

Caitlin and I attempted to "train" for the event, and will continue to do so after realizing we are competely incapable of rope climbing, scaling walls, etc.

We hope you join us for the event - sign up here

Stay tuned as we will share some entertaining/embarrassing training videos and pictures soon.

  1. You will love Spartan Race! There's nothing to be afraid of. I'm very glad that inov-8 and Spartan Race have decided to partner. I won a free pair of inov-8's at the Spartan Utah Beast a few weeks ago - made me so happy!

  2. Training for the Super Spartan in Squamish right now, on my way to completing the Trifecta this year, and I just picked up a pair of the Roclite 312GTXs. Practice your burpees (you'll be doing plenty along the way), and if there's an opportunity to do a few to crawl through the bigger tunnel - TAKE IT! Other than that, just have fun.

  3. You will enjoy it! It was a humbling experience for me and I surprised myself finishing it. The burpees did not bother me so much because I do CrossFit training. Inov-8 is a great brand for all types of training - what a great match up! As always, drink lots of water!

  4. I've been training (in my Inov8's of course) for my first triathlon. My race is this Sunday, which is also my birthday. Last weekend I volunteered at our local CamBam 5K mud obstacle course. Everyone had a blast. Here is my advice: Wear shoe covers and have fun!

  5. The best thing in my opinion is to take your time, Obstacle course races are just tons of fun and whenever I do it, I never care about how long it takes me, just take my time enjoying it with a group and overcoming obstacles I haven't done before.

  6. I attempt to run a obstacle course or road race once a month (I live in California, so the climate allows year round events) and my inov-8's are the only shoe I use. I am slowly converting most of my CrossFit buddies as well. I agree with Elvis on the obstacle courses. Take your time and enjoy the ride!

  7. See you in Amesbury! Concentrate on training that focuses on explosive power coupled with high intensity cardio (think burpees, box jumps, squat thrusters, etc...) even if you can't get out and log a ton of miles on the road or trail these types of exercise will help you immensely. Secondly, don't be intimidated, the courses can be very challenging at times but that's what makes them so friggin fun. As with anything you get out what you put in, good luck!

  8. Learn to love burpees. It may be one of the most difficult things you do, but I promise it will be loads of fun.

  10. Just enjoy the event and the experience dont go in to it with wanting achieving a time, take it for what it is...FUN, and soak up the atmosphere. if you can survive 7 minutes of Burpees you can achieve anything :) enjoy

  11. Do lots of Burpees, and train with friends that want to do the race with you. It will be loads of fun to have a group of friends finish the race together vs going for a time and competing alone! also Crossfit is a great way to train!

  12. Firstly remember to have fun. I did my first spartan race last year and came 6th (looking to improve on that this year) and the one thing I quickly learnt was that all the crawling quickly shreds your knees. If this bothers you I'd recommend leggings

  13. I have never taken part in anything else but running races and kayak races but would truly love to try more sports.

My tip for quitting smokes, quitting the couch and start losing weight all along becoming increasingly more happy is to start at your level - not the starting level of some fancy book and to turn every training social by inviting friends.

That has made me show up a lot of times I felt like staying home. Naturally - I felt great after the training regardless if I began tired, it had rained or whatever obstacle I overcame.

  14. Looking for tips? You already off to a great start - you've signed up for a race that's not too far off, and have friends to train with :-) [schedule in training together and you won't miss it]

With only 4 weeks of training, I'd say put in some trail run miles, 3 days a week, and do burpees with pushups (even during the run) as many have suggested (with good form), and pullups and chinups. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's only a few weeks so it's primarily about getting used to it (not burning yourself out).

What will really help is getting a list of obstacles and use your friends/associates/interwebs to learn the basic techniques... rope climb isn't hard once you learn to use your feet and legs to push you up the rope (you don't need to muscle it up with just your arms), the wall is about momentum (stopping and thinking about it kills that, just run up and jump up, and momentum makes it easy to pull yourself over), etc.

Eat well, drink lots of fluids, and sleep well during the couple of days *before* the race. Your most important sleep is not the night before (many racers don't sleep well the night before), it's the night before that.

Race day, eat a smaller breakfast, don't rush yourself getting there. Cotton clothing is bad (holds water and mud) and gets snagged. Actually, race in as little as you are comfortable with and make it snug fitting (doesn't snag or slow you down).

When the race starts, you want to be far enough up in your wave that you minimize your lineups, but don't get caught up in the rush to be at the front of the pack, you'll just exhaust yourself before you've even started. Run at a fast-ish pace that you can sustain, and on long super steep hills - powerwalk them quickly (seriously, keeps the heart rate down and ready to run the other side).

Largely... have fun and keep moving forward, persistence in training, racing, and life is where success if found :-)

  15. I'm training for my first Spartan Race too - the Midwest event later this year.

I've been using SEALfit workouts (www.sealfit.com). It's a lot like CrossFit, but where CrossFit may do strength one day & endurance another, SEALfit has something to increase your strength, endurance, etc. every day. Check it out, let me know what you think.

  16. Make sure you're capable of doing some burpees. Other than that, take your time and enjoy the ride!

  17. I am training for the Spartan Beast at Glen Rose, TX in December. I signed up for the competitive heat too. I recently ran the Merrell's Down & Dirty National Mud 10K Run at Cedar Hill, TX in a pair of F-Light 195's and finished 7th out of 32 in the Military Public Service heat.I loved running in these shoes and had no problem in the mud, I wasn't slipping and sliding at all which I was a little worried about. My first mud run, I was wearing a pair of Nike Free Run 2.0 and I was sliding all over the place and could not get any footing at all. In all my future races (including the Spartan Beast) I plan on running in Inov-8.

  18. I also just signed up for my first Spartan...August 26th! Super excited! My method of training is Crossfit in my inov-8's. I would make sure you have a positive and motivated team which will help pushing you through the end. At my box we have a great team the continues to run races together and makes it so much more fun! Read someone elses comments that you could win a pair at the actual race...had no idea. Now I have something else to look forward to at the finish line. Good luck and have fun!
